    Review

Amanda and the Dolphin Squad are excited and just a little nervous— the school cross country race is coming up, and it’s compulsory! Mai is particularly worried, as she doesn’t enjoy running at all, so the friends decide to stick together and support each other for the whole race, making sure no one gets left behind. Amanda, Lu, and Mai all pinky promise to run as a group, and Operation Cross Country is in motion!

On the day of the race Eve, one of the fastest runners in Grade 3, and Rosie, a new girl who is not very fast at all, ask if they can also run with the group. The girls agree, and as the race starts everyone heads off together. Unfortunately, Rosie just can’t keep up, and even though Amanda hangs back with her the other girls break their promise and run ahead, securing places in the District Finals and leaving Amanda behind. Amanda is very upset with her friends for breaking their promise, but an uneasy truce is reached when Amanda finds out she has made it into the final.

For the final, the girls in Dolphin Squad decide to run individually and just meet at the finish line. Amanda takes off and eventually makes it into the top five runners (giving her the chance to go to the Regional Finals), but when she sees another girl trip and injure herself she knows she has to help, even if it costs her the race. When Mai and Lu catch up, they don’t decide to stay and help—no one is getting left behind this time. At school the next week, the three girls all receive special ‘good sport’ awards—they may not have qualified for Regionals, but they did the right thing and made everyone very proud.

The Pinky Promise is the second book in the Amanda Commander series and is a great story about friendship and doing the right thing, even when it’s difficult. Younger readers will enjoy this fun book and its important lessons about keeping your promises and supporting others.
