Amanda Commander: The Yellow Dress

Amanda and her friends couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming school BBQ and disco–it’s the first time their class has been old enough to attend. Amanda has picked out a canary-yellow dress with long sleeves and pockets, but to her dismay, the dress Eve is planning to wear sounds identical! The Dolphin Squad has a new mission: make sure Eve doesn’t wear the same dress as Amanda! 

Over the course of the week, Amanda, Lu and Mai work to convince Eve to change her dress choice, but are ultimately unsuccessful. In the end, they decide to all wear matching dresses and matching braids–that way it’ll look intentional. But when they arrive, they find that Eve and her two best friends have shown up wearing matching PEACH dresses, not canary-yellow! 

This fun, light-hearted chapter book for younger readers showcases the importance of focusing on positivity and time spent with friends over jealousy and possessiveness. 

Once Amanda and the Dolphin Squad decide to wear matching outfits, the embarrassment of wearing the same thing as someone else completely disappears and is replaced with the fun of sharing with friends. In fact, when Eve sees that Amanda and her friends have had the same idea as Eve and her friends, they end up getting a group photo together to memorialise it–and it becomes a treasured memory. Illustrations and notes in the characters’ handwriting bring the Dolphin Squad to life.
