    Review

Young Fia desperately wants to see Hy Brasil, the mysterious island that, according to legend, only surfaces from the sea once every seven years. Late at night, when the moon is high, Fia makes her way to the seaside and, feeling the pull of the island’s magic, makes her way across the water. Suddenly, there it is! Hy Brasil rises from the waves and Fia explores, playing with all manner of mystical creatures.

Dancing the night away, Fia finds herself on the ocean floor and stepping amongst the stars, able to look down upon her colourful little home. When morning comes, Fia finds herself back on solid ground, watching Hy Brasil sink back into the water. Feeling happy and contended, Fia runs all the way back home.

Based on an Irish legend, this story has a beautifully magical feel to it. The gorgeously colourful and eye-catching illustrations pair perfectly with the lilting, lyrical story to make a wonderful picture book, perfect for reading aloud and inspiring wonder in young readers.

    Content Notes

Hy Brasil is said to be a magical island; Fia gets there by walking across the sea, the island contains mythical creatures, and Fia dances ‘till her feet barely touch the ground’, taking her beneath the sea and into the air above the island for much of the night.
