The Competent Supervisor Questionnaire (Self Discovery Series)

Well-developed supervisory skills are crucial in today's business environment. In a world of flatter organisational structures, leaner workforces and fast moving technology, the quality of front line supervision makes a significant difference to the success of any enterprise.

The good news is that the skills required to be an effective supervisor can be measured and learned. By becoming proficient in each of the required skills areas, supervisors (or potential supervisors) can build a solid foundation that will aid them to excel in their role - despite their many challenges - and increase their opportunities to progress to higher levels of management.

This competency based self-assessment instrument has been designed to help you understand more about your relative skills or abilities in the following critical skill sets:

•     Setting direction

•     Planning and organising

•     Coaching/developing people

•     Measuring and managing performance

•     Maintaining effective relationships

This will give a picture of your overall ability as a supervisor and help you determine where to target your development activities to improve your skills.

How this instrument is scored

This instrument measures an individual's competency and is scored using scenario-based multiple choice options. It presents 25 typical workplace scenarios and asks respondents to decide what they would actually do in each. These answers are then plotted on a separate carbon form to gain a total 'Competent Supervisor Score'.

Results are then recorded on a circular chart representing all five core areas to determine strengths and areas for development. Specific and comprehensive notes on how to improve in each category are offered as well as tips on what behaviours to avoid. Space for action planning notes is also allowed.
