    Review

Lola always seems to be stuck in the middle. At school, her two best friends — Indi and Tasha — are always fighting. At home, her dad is going away for another 6-month stint with the navy, and her mum isn’t happy about it. Desperate for everyone to get along, Lola is forced into the role of peacemaker, and never puts herself first. The netball coach, Mariella, appoints Lola as captain of the team, and that only makes the conflict between Indi and Tasha worse. At first Lola doesn’t notice that her health has begun to suffer, but when she’s diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, she has to start taking care of herself. But it all seems so complicated, and the consequences of missing one blood sugar test can’t be that bad — right?

Meanwhile, things between Indi and Tasha are more strained than ever, and they aren’t taking Lola’s diabetes seriously. The Kangaroo Valley team is doing well in the inter-school competitions, but Mariella is convinced that Lola needs to intervene before Indi and Tasha’s selfish play style ruins their season. Things come to a head when, in the process of smoothing things over with her friends, Lola experiences hypoglycaemia so severe that she has to be taken to hospital in an ambulance.

Lola’s father finally begins to realise how serious Lola’s health concerns are when he comes home on compassionate leave. Indi and Tasha finally get it too — but they’re still not getting along. The day of the NSW State Finals comes along, and Lola has to put everything she’s learnt into practice — she has to stand up for herself by telling Indi and Tasha to put the team first, and more importantly, by leaving the court when she begins to feel sick.

While Lola’s scrappy little team are knocked out of the championships, the lessons her teammates — and her parents — have learned about cooperation have resulted in positive changes. Lola has started taking responsibility for her own health and happiness rather than everyone else’s, and she’s excited to make it even further in the state netball competition next year.

Lola’s anxiety about rocking the boat and her need to keep everyone happy make for a kind-hearted and sympathetic protagonist. As Lola grows and changes over the course of the book — learning to accept and control her condition, to stand up for herself, and to recognise her needs — important lessons about self-care and communication are imparted. Lola’s diabetes is presented in a realistic and authentic way.
